Formal Titles in Portuguese

Part of the Portuguese For Dummies Cheat Sheet

If you’re talking to an authority figure or you want to show respect to an elder, be sure to use the formal title when addressing him or her in Portuguese:

  • o senhor (ooh seen-yoh) (Sir; literally, the gentleman)

  • a senhora (ah-seen-yoh-rah) (Ma’am; literally, the lady)
