For Seniors: Switch between Programs on a Windows Laptop

Windows 7 allows you to run multiple programs at the same time, and switch between them as you work. Switch from one Windows program to another whenever you like, without closing them down (exiting). Each program will remain in memory — open and running — until you need it.

Exit or close a program only when you are through with it. Exiting a program frees up computer resources.

  1. Open two or more programs.

The last program that you open is the active program, which means that it’s the one that responds to keypresses or movements of the mouse..

  2. Press Alt+Tab to move from one open application window to another.

You move through the list of open programs with each press of Alt+Tab. When the program you want to switch to is displayed, release both keys.

  3. Press and hold Alt+Tab.

A small box appears, revealing all opened programs.

  4. Release the Tab key but keep Alt pressed down.

Press Tab to cycle through the icons representing open programs.

  5. Release the Alt key.

Windows 7 switches to whichever program is selected. To switch back to the last program that was active, simply press Alt+Tab, and that program becomes the active program once again.

All open programs also appear as items on the Windows 7 taskbar. Just click any running program on the taskbar to display that window and make it the active program. If the taskbar isn’t visible, press the Windows key on your keyboard to display it.
