For Seniors: Set Default Programs for Your Windows Files
Control which Windows programs open your files, and you make working with files easier. When you double-click a file, the program associated with that file type opens it. For example, if you have several graphics editing programs, you might want to control which one opens your digital camera images.
Choose Start→Control Panel→Programs.
The Programs window appears.
Click the Set Your Default Programs link in the Default Programs section.
The Set Default Programs window appears.
Click a program in the list on the left and then click the Set This Program as Default option.
Choosing this option tells Windows to use this program to open all file types that it's compatible with.
You can also click Choose Defaults for this Program and select specific file types that a program can open (such as just TIFF and JPEG graphics file format for a graphics editing program); click Save after you’ve made these selections.
Click OK to save your settings.
Windows will now open the selected program whenever you double-click on the associated file type.
You can also choose which devices to use by default to play media such as movies or audio files. Click the Change Default Settings for Media or Devices link in the Programs window you opened in Step 1 to do so.
