For Seniors: Remove a Printer from Your Laptop

If you upgrade to a new printer for your laptop, remove the old printer (and its printer driver software) to keep it running lean and mean.

To use a printer with your laptop, you have to install its printer driver; if you remove the printer driver, the Printers window won't be cluttered with printers you don’t use anymore. Working with the printers you do use will then become simpler and easier.

1

Choose Start→Devices and Printers.

The Devices and Printers window appears, and it lists all your printers and scanners.

2

Right-click a printer and choose Remove Device.

You can also select the printer and click the Remove Device button at the top of the window to remove a printer. A Printers dialog box appears.

3

Click Yes.

The Devices and Printers window closes, and your printer is removed from the printer list.

If you remove a printer from your laptop by following these steps, it’s removed from the list of installed printers. If the printer you removed was the default printer, Windows makes another printer you have installed the default printer. You can no longer print to a removed printer, unless you install it again.
