For Seniors: Play Hearts on a Windows Computer

Windows provides many games such as Hearts that you can play for fun and to relieve stress. You play Windows Hearts like you might play the real game of Hearts, by winning tricks while taking the least number of heart cards and avoiding the Queen of spades.

1

Choose Start→Games, then double-click Hearts.

The Hearts window appears, and the cards are dealt to you (displayed) and your opponents (hidden)..

2

Begin play by clicking three cards to pass to your opponent, and then click the arrow button.

The first game, you pass to the left; the next game, you pass to the right.

3

Play each trick.

Beginning with the player who has the two of spades, each player plays a card in the same suit as the first card led. Play your card by clicking it. You must play a spade in this first round, unless you don't have any. You cannot, however, play the Queen of spades or a heart in the first round.

If you have a card in the lead suit you must play it; if you don't, you can play a heart (even if you have cards in other suits), as long as hearts has already been laid down in a previous trick.

The highest card in the same suit as the first card led (ranked Ace down to two) takes the trick (all the cards laid down in that round). Play continues with the winner of the last trick playing the lead card.

The goal is to accumulate the lowest number of points. Get rid of your hearts (which count 1 point) and the Queen of spades (which counts 13 points) by dumping them during a round in which you will not win the trick.

4

If desired, change the game options by choosing Game→Options.

Name your three opponents, and choose options for sound, animation, tips, and saving the game. Click OK and choose whether to apply these settings now.

5

To close Hearts, click the Close button.

Click either Save or Don’t Save in the Exit Game dialog box that appears.
