For Seniors: Modify Your Laptop's Scanner Settings

Change a scanner's default settings in Windows 7 to make it easier to scan material using your preferred options. You use a scanner connected to your laptop to convert hard copies of information into electronic files that you can then view, print, and sometimes edit (with the right software).

After you install a scanner, take a look at its default settings, and set them to your preferences — for example, whether you usually want to save the scanned data in color or grayscale.

  1. Choose Start→Control Panel/

    The Control Panel window appears.

  2. In the Search box, at the top of the window, type scanners.

Windows returns a set of links. Click the View Scanners and Cameras link. The Scanners and Cameras window appears.

  3. Click the scanner you'd like to modify, then click the Scan Profiles button.

    The Profiles dialog box appears.

  4. Select a scanner and click Edit.

The Edit Default Profile dialog box appears.

  5. Make changes as needed and click Save Profile.

Review the settings, which might include (depending on your scanner model) color management for fine-tuning the way colors are scanned and resolution settings that control how detailed a scan is performed. (The higher the resolution, the crisper and cleaner your electronic document, but the more time it might take to scan.)

When you're through making modifications, click Save Profile to return to the Properties dialog box and then click the Close button twice to close the Scan Profiles and Scanners and Cameras windows.
