If you worked on a file recently on your computer and want to make additional changes to it, Windows offers a shortcut to that saves you time. To open a recently used file on your computer:

  1. Open the Start menu and right-click any blank area.

    A shortcut menu appears.

  2. Choose Properties.

    The Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box appears.

  3. Click the Start Menu tab.

    You only need to do this step if that tab isn’t already displayed.

  4. Make sure that the Store and Display Recently Opened Items in the Start Menu and the Taskbar checkbox is selected and then click OK.

    Recently opened programs should be displayed in the Start menu by default, but if they aren’t, make sure that the Store and Display Recently Opened Programs in the Start Menu checkbox is selected.

  5. Open the Start menu and hover your mouse over any recently opened program or recently opened item.

    Recently opened programs are listed on the left side and have an arrow and recently opened items appear to the right.

  6. Choose a file from the submenu.

    The file opens.
