For Seniors: ChangeYour Laptop’s Desktop Background

Windows allows you to change the desktop background on your laptop to a picture or a color that appeals to you. Personalizing the Windows desktop may seem like an inconsequential thing, but it’s the little things that make using a laptop fun, even if you’re using it to get work done.

1

Right-click the desktop and choose Personalize from the shortcut menu.

The Personalization window appears.

2

Click the Desktop Background link.

The Desktop Background window appears.

3

Select a category of desktop background options from the Picture Location drop-down menu.

Thumbnails of your choices display in the viewing area.

4

If needed, click Browse to locate the folder where the pictures you want to use are stored.

When you click Browse, the Browse for Folder dialog box appears. Click the folder that contains the pictures you want to use (for example, click Libraries and then Pictures to access your Pictures folder) and then click OK to return to the Desktop Background window.

5

Click the image(s) that you want to use.

The image is previewed on your desktop. You can select more than one image and then have Windows periodically shuffle through them. Change other options such as Picture Position as desired.

6

Click Save Changes, and then close the Personalization window.

The new background is applied to your desktop.

If you apply a desktop theme, you overwrite previous desktop settings such as these. If you apply a desktop theme and then go back and change desktop settings, you replace the theme’s settings. However, making changes is easy and keeps your desktop interesting, so play around with themes and desktop backgrounds all you like!
