For Seniors: Attach a File to a Hotmail Message

When sending an e-mail message through Windows Live Hotmail, you can attach a file if you want, and send it along too. You might attach an image, for example, or a document, spreadsheet, or presentation to a message. Once the message is received, the recipient can open the attachment and view or make changes to it.

1

Display the Windows Live home page, sign into your account, and click the Hotmail link to go to the Hotmail portion of Windows Live.

Enter your new Windows Live ID and password, and then click the Sign In button. The Windows Live Home page appears. Click the Hotmail link at the top of the page, and your Inbox appears.

2

Click New to create a new e-mail message.

Address it, enter a subject, and type a message.

3

Click the Attachments button.

The Open dialog box appears.

4

Locate the file that you want and then click Open.

The name of the attached file appears in the Attach field, indicating that it’s uploading to Hotmail. When the first attachment finishes uploading, you can click the Attachments button again and repeat this step as many times as you like to add more attachments.

Make sure that you don't attach a large file or too many smaller files to an e-mail, because the message may not get delivered. Various e-mail servers have different limits on the size of attachments, and some prevent you from attaching certain types of files for security reasons. Compress (zip) files together prior to attaching them to an e-mail, in order to make them small enough to send safely.

5

Click the Send button.

The message and its attachment(s) are sent.
