‘Follow’ Employers You’d Like to Work For
Everyone's heard of the ‘hidden’ job market — those jobs that become available but get snapped up without ever being listed on job boards or in newspapers. Well, in the digital age more jobs are becoming visible — you just have to know where to look for them. By ‘following’ a company online, you open a window to many of these job opportunities.
Follow employers on Facebook
Use Facebook to ‘like’ a company you want to work for (they may even check if you have done this if you land a job interview). By liking the company you automatically start following its Facebook updates. You can view news, job postings and even sign up for newsletters that will tell you lots about their products and services. Your preferred employer may even notice you via comments you make on its Facebook posts but make sure your comments are positive and well considered.
Up close and personal via Twitter
Sometimes you can pick up on the fact a company is expanding and therefore hiring simply by using Twitter to follow the CEO of your preferred employers. Where else could you tune in to the conversations a CEO is having about company results, challenges and future plans? You can also follow relevant senior executives particularly from the department you would like to work for.
Rather than having to scroll the daily Twitter feed or the profiles of those you follow, you can set up a free account with either Hootsuite or Tweetdeck so that you can view relevant posts in one place. You can also make comments on the posts of those you follow and engage them in conversation online.
Your mission is to impress and get noticed so don’t overdo it or forget your manners just because you’re not face-to-face with the person on the receiving end of a tweet.
Use LinkedIn's ‘Company Follow’ tool
According to Search Engine Journal, two people sign up to LinkedIn every second (as of March 1, 2014). However, companies are also signing up to LinkedIn in droves, making it dead easy for you to follow the companies you want to work for.
To follow a company, go to the LinkedIn home page and look for the search box at the top. Either use the drop-down list on the left side of the search box to click on ‘Companies’, or simply type in the name of your preferred employer. When the company profile appears, click on the ‘Follow’ button. Easy!
Following a company gives you quick access to its latest news and jobs. Some company big wigs are also among LinkedIn’s ‘influencers’ and you can follow them too. For example, follow Richard Branson if you want to work for Virgin. By following a company, you will also get to see anyone from your first or second-degree network on LinkedIn who works or has worked for the company. They could be a good source of job info too.
