Finding and Installing Free WordPress Plugins

Plugins (add-ons) for WordPress provide specific solutions for your website, such as e-commerce (selling products), photo galleries and portfolios, web forms, social networking, and more. Free plugins for WordPress can be easily installed within your Dashboard.

1

Choose Plugins→Add New.

2

Type a term in the Search box and click the Search Plugins button.

WordPress searches for plugins that match the term. The Install Plugins page appears with a list of matching plugins. At the bottom of the Install Plugins page is a selection of keywords (tags). You can also click a keyword (such as admin) to display all the plugins tagged with that keyword.

3

Click the Details link below the title of the plugin you wish to install.

The Plugin Information dialog box, which provides a description of the plugin, appears.

4

Click the Installation tab at the top of the Plug Information dialog box.

Read the installation instructions before you proceed. Each plugin’s installation and activation differs.

5

Click the Description tab and then click the Install Now button to install the plugin.

The dialog box closes, and the Installing Plugin page appears, with a message stating whether your plugin installed successfully.

6

Click the Activate Plugin link to activate the plugin on your website.

If you see anything other than a successful message, follow the support instructions in the Plugin Information dialog box under the Description tab. This may include an FAQ tab or a Support link. Always make note of any error messages you see.

7

Choose Plugins→Plugins on the Dashboard to verify that your plugin installed successfully.

Your plugin appears in the list on the Plugins page.
