Facebook Privacy Basics for Your Job Search

You need to manager Facebook’s privacy settings to ensure that hiring managers are getting the right information about you. To access the privacy settings page, click on the Account button at the top of any page and select Privacy Settings from the drop-down menu that appears.

You can then change settings in any of the following categories:

  • Connecting on Facebook

  • Sharing on Facebook

  • Apps and websites (as in the ones connected to your profile)

  • Lists of blocked users and applications

The first two categories, Connecting on Facebook and Sharing on Facebook, offer a few different levels of privacy that you can select from. Here they are, in order of least private to most private:

  • Everyone: Content you deem safe for everyone is indexed by Google and appears on your public profile (so hiring managers can see it). Set your bio and links to be viewed by Everyone because they’re a part of your personal brand.

  • Friends and Networks: This setting is for content that can be seen by second-degree connections and anyone who belongs to the same networks you do. (A network in Facebook land refers to a school or a company.)

  • Friends of Friends: Any content marked with this label can be seen by second-degree connections.

  • Friends Only: Only first-degree connections can view content with this label.
