Exploring Advertising Networks for Bloggers

Although most bloggers set out to join the blogosphere as a hobby, many quickly realize that page views often translate to dollars. Whether you want to include advertising on your site simply to pay your hosting bills or you want to turn your blog into a serious income generator, ad networks are a great place to start.

Each blog advertising network operates a bit differently, and each sets its own list of blog requirements to participate. Regardless of which ad network you apply to, placing ads on your site is a nice way to make a passive income while creating the content that you — and your readers — love. Here are just a few of the ad networks to consider:

  • BlogHer Publishing Network: BlogHer's ad network works with a specific blog niche, namely those written by or sometimes for women. Unlike some ad networks, BlogHer expects its bloggers to follow very strict editorial guidelines.

  • Technorati: Technorati allows bloggers within its ad network to place ad tags in their blog sidebars as well as at the top or bottom of the page. Technorati claims to attract top-tier advertisers that place high-quality ads from known brands on the blogs in their network.

  • BlogAds: BlogAds allows publishers using its service to set their own prices, accept ad placement on a case-by-case basis, and place ads that are unique to their blog rather than placed throughout the entire network.

  • Google AdSense: Google AdSense is a nice option for bloggers looking to dive into the world of monetization. AdSense is linked to your Google Account, making it easy to integrate into your other Google tools such as Google Analytics and Gmail.

  • Lijit: Lijit, owned by online advertising powerhouse Federated Media, combines an ad network with analytics. This set of tools allows publishers to make money while learning more about their audiences.

  • Izea: Although Izea does place ads on blogs, it also pays online influencers for campaigns across a variety of social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest.
