Your skin is your largest organ. Yes, your skin is actually an organ, and anything you put on the skin has a direct route into your bloodstream. When you put something on your skin, ask yourself, “Is this product pure enough that I could actually eat it?” If not, you probably shouldn't have it on your skin at all.

You can make toxin-free choices with these common products:

  • Makeup and moisturizers: Makeup and moisturizers include numerous chemicals. A good way to find toxin-free options is to purchase unscented brands. They usually have no petrochemicals or their derivatives. Look for a company that makes it a priority not to use harmful ingredients.

  • Perfumes: Perfumes can cause toxins and allergies in many people. Instead, try essential oils, which are lightly fragranced in different scents. You can even buy them in sprays or roll-ons. Most health food stores and grocers carry essential oils.

  • Antiperspirants: Stay away from any antiperspirants that have aluminum in them. Because you're putting these products under your arm near the breast tissue, you need to be extra cautious. You shouldn't put anything with toxins near your breast tissue. Opt for a more natural deodorant, which doesn't contain aluminum. This holds true for both men and women.

  • Nail polish: Nail products are filled with chemicals. Actually, a nail spa can be a toxic trap if your provider uses products with chemicals. Look for holistic spas where you have a better chance of getting a more natural product (and a better experience all around).

  • Toothpastes: Toothpastes are often filled with toxins, and some even contain artificial sugars. Opt for a more natural brand, like Tom's of Maine, where you don't have to worry about all the chemicals and toxins included on the label.

  • Shampoos: Take a minute and read the back of your shampoo bottle. Shampoos have tons of chemicals. You can find alternatives pretty easily if you look. For example, Aveda is a good option and widely available.

Your body is a beautiful intelligent system. It renews and regenerates when you give it the raw material to do so. You're part of the world, and the world is part of you. You have to work within this framework to reduce toxins the best you can.

Although this information may be daunting, the marketplace is seeing more and more toxin-free foods and products every year. As awareness increases, so will the choices. Make sure you educate yourself on where you can cut back on your daily surroundings of toxins and select different choices that fit your needs.

When you shift your paradigm to wellness, you get better as you go along, and making better choices becomes fluid after you've done it for a while.
