Efficient Furnaces Mean Low Winter Heating Bills

You can save money and stay warmer in winter by investing in an efficient furnace, and also having it regularly serviced. If your existing furnace dies, or you’re looking for a furnace for your new home, it’s a good idea to look for a model with the highest efficiency rating possible. Here’s why: with a furnace that's 80-percent efficient, for every $10 of heat you buy, you’re losing $2 of it out the window — or chimney or wherever. But with a 95-percent efficient furnace, you’re only losing 50 cents worth of heat!

You should also keep in mind that your furnace works most efficiently when it's serviced regularly (twice a year is good) and the ducts are clean. And while the servicemen are there, ask them to check and see if they can adjust the venting so less heat goes into rooms you don’t use very often, such as your laundry room, and more heat is diverted into the rooms where you spend most of your time.
