Drupal Menu Customization

Menus are a collection of links (menu items) used to navigate a website. The Menu module in Drupal provides an interface to control and customize the powerful menu system that comes with Drupal. To add an item to a menu, follow these steps:

  1. From the Dashboard menu bar, choose Structure→Menus.

  2. Click List Links in the row of the menu to which you want to add an item.

In the example, the List Links in the Main Menu row has been clicked. You see a list of links in the menu. In this case, you only see the Home and Contact Us links.

  3. Click the Add Link icon.

You see the Add Item form.

  4. In the Menu Link Title text box, enter the text you want used for the link.

For example, you could type something like About Us or Products.

  5. Enter the URL or path to your basic page or article in the Path text box.

You can also use external links (for example, www.dummies.com).

To get the correct URL for a basic page or article node, follow these steps:

    1. Open your site in another browser window.

    2. From the Dashboard menu bar, click Content.

    3. Locate the article or basic page to which you want to link and click its title.

    4. Click in the address bar of your browser and copy the URL to that page by pressing Ctrl+C or cmd+C.

The URL will look something like http://drupalfordummies.com/node/10. This is what you paste into the Path text box.

  6. (Optional) Enter a description of the page you’re linking in the Description text box.

This description will appear when a mouse cursor passes over the link.

  7. (Optional) If you want to hide the link temporarily, deselect the Enabled check box.

  8. For now, leave Show as Expanded, Parent Item, and Weight settings as they are.

You use these when you create child links.

  9. Click Save.

You return to the List Items form.

You should already see your new Main menu item on your pages.

You can change the order of the Main menu items by dragging them up or down in the list on the List items page.
