Delete an Image from the Windows 8 Photos App

5 of 5

The images that you create may not always turn out perfectly. A photo may be blurry, or an edited image may not turn out the way that you wanted it to. When you are viewing an album or watching a slide show, having a bad image turn up can make the experience less pleasant. You can prevent that from happening by deleting an image you no longer want to work with or view. You can delete a single image or multiple images with a single command.

Here's how to delete a single image from the Photos app:

  1. Open the image that you want to delete.

  2. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen.

    The Photos application bar appears.

  3. Tap Delete.

The Photos app asks you to confirm the deletion.

  4. Tap Delete to show you're sure.

    The image goes away.

To delete multiple images from the Photos app, follow these steps:

  1. Open the album that contains the images you want to delete.

  2. Swipe down on each image that you want to delete.

A check mark is added to indicate that the photo is selected. The Photos app updates the number of images selected.

If you select an image by accident, swipe down on it again to deselect.

To start over, tap Clear selection.

  3. Tap Delete.

The Photos app asks you to confirm the deletion.

  4. Tap Delete.

    The image vanishes.

To delete all but a few photos in an album, display the application bar by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. Tap Select all to select every image in the album and then swipe down on each image that you want to keep. Tap Delete and then tap Delete again when the Photos app asks you to confirm the deletion. This is an especially useful tip when you're working with an album that contains a lot of photos.

Windows 8 sends deleted images to the Recycle Bin, so in most cases if you delete an image accidentally, you can find it and restore the photo from that folder. On the Start screen, tap Desktop to open the Desktop app and then double-tap the Recycle Bin icon. In the Recycle Bin window, tap the image you want to retrieve to select it, then tap the Manage tab, and then tap Restore the selected items.
