Deciding on a Dishwasher

Hand-washing dishes can be fun, therapeutic, or a pain in the glass. Get a dishwasher if you find no joy in suds. The bonus: Dishwashers actually use less water, energy, and soap compared with hand washing. (For maximum efficiency, run the dishwasher only when full, and don’t rinse dishes prior to loading.)

You can find dishwashers in a number of forms:

  • Built-in dishwasher: These kinds of dishwashers are part of your kitchen setup, like the cabinets and sink.

  • Portable dishwasher: These compact, free-standing dishwashers give you flexibility in where you position them in your kitchen.

  • Tabletop dishwasher: For modest dishwashing needs, these convenient gadgets can get the job done.

  • Child labor dishwasher: These often-small units sometimes need a little grease ($) to get them working efficiently.

Newer dishwashers don’t require pre-rinsing of dishes (just scrape the scraps into the trash), and new dishwasher detergent formulas leave dishes spot-free.

If you cook for a family, a dishwasher can save you a lot of time, but remember that dishwashers also use a lot of water and electricity. But for those who would rather spend time cooking than washing dishes, the expense is well worth it.
