Control File-Sharing Security for Your BlackBerry PlayBook

The BlackBerry PlayBook will let you share certain files via USB cable as well as by WiFi wireless connection. In order for either to happen, you have to enable sharing; the safest setting is to turn both off when they aren’t needed. The operating system issues a warning if you enable file sharing without a password.

To turn sharing on or off, or to apply a password, do the following:

  1. Tap the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the home screen.

  2. Tap the Storage & Sharing tab.

This particular tab has five sets of controls; you’ll need to work your way down the page moving text up to get to the lower portion.

Start by making a selection on the USB Connections control.

  3. Tap the down arrow and choose one of these:

    • Automatically Detect (which should be able to distinguish between Windows and PC devices)

    • Connect to Windows

    • Connect to Mac

  4. In the File Sharing section, move the slider to On or Off.

When it is set to On, you’re allowing the transfer of files over a USB cable anytime one is detected by the system.

  5. Make a choice in the WiFi Sharing section, moving the slider to On or Off.

Set to On, this permits transfer of files wirelessly. WiFi Sharing is on the lower portion of this page.

  6. To make it so a password must be entered each time before files are transferred, move the slider for Password Protect to On. Then enter and confirm a password.
