Your stored variables are available for use in any application that is part of the same problem. You can use these variables to set up the TI-Nspire Lists & Spreadsheet page for data capture.

Before doing so, move to the Lists & Spreadsheet page and name column A Length_ and column B Area_. (The list can’t be named the same thing as a variable; adding an underscore symbol to the list name avoids this problem.)

The Automatic Data Capture command collects the length and area data automatically when you move the rectangle in the Geometry application.

To configure the Automatic Data Capture command, move your cursor to the formula cell of column A and follow these steps:

  1. Press [MENU]→Data→Data Capture→Automatic Data Capture.

    This action pastes the Automatic Data Capture command in the formula cell. The cursor is positioned in the place where you input the variable name to be captured.

  2. Specify the variable by pressing [VAR], highlighting length, and pressing [ENTER].

    After you press [ENTER] for the last time, notice that the current length measurement is automatically placed in cell A1.

  3. Move the cursor to the formula cell for column B and repeat Steps 1 and 2. Select area as the variable to link to.

    Notice that the current area measurement is placed in cell B1.

The first screen shows the Automatic Data Capture command in the formula cell for column A. The second screen shows the command for column B.

Before moving on, move to the Lists & Spreadsheet page and name column A Length_ and column B Area_. (The list can’t be named the same thing as a variable; adding an underscore symbol to the list name avoids this problem.)

It is often a good idea to use an extra parameter whenever using automatic data capture to capture two variables, so that the data capture is dependent on the other variable you are capturing. The syntax for automatic data capture is capture (variable to capture, 1, variable the capture is dependent on). See the third screen. This technique assures that the data is properly collected each time one of the variables changes.

Notice that the entire Data Capture command is revealed in the formula cell. The 1 following the variables length and area indicates automatic data capture. A 0 indicates manual data capture.
