City Locations for Dog Photography Sessions

If you live in a city with not many parks or other greenery, find locations for your dog photo shoots that have other types of color. You can go literal with this approach by finding public art, vibrantly painted walls, or even graffiti to shoot against. Or look beyond the surface to bring out a city’s unique beauty.

Here, Tyson is in a very colorful part of Venice, California, set up in front of a street mural. It just so happened that a person on a bicycle passed by, and the photographer snapped the photo at exactly the right moment to frame Tyson in the wheel.

Not only does this photo have wonderful color but it also includes an iconic Southern California beach cruiser. Right away, the image evokes a very specific place because of the combination of these elements.

Think about what makes your city special. What are symbols of culture and identity for you? Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Architecture: Chicago has brownstones and Frank Lloyd Wright, New York has skyscrapers and magnificent bridges, and Los Angeles has case study houses and beach towns. Find the marvels that represent your city and capitalize on them.

  • Public transportation: Chicago has the El, New York’s got the subway, D.C. depends on the Metro. Most of these aren’t pet-friendly (except for service animals), but you can find ways to incorporate your local public transit if you think creatively. (Hint: Station signage is usually visible from the sidewalk.)

  • Sports stadiums: Again, sports stadiums usually aren’t pet-friendly, but nothing is stopping you from hanging out in front of Wrigley Field, Dodger Stadium, Fenway Park, or whatever your local team’s stomping grounds are. Get some shots on nongame days in front of iconic signage, statues, and architecture.
