Basics of the Google Play Store for Nexus 7 Tablet

People love to shop when they’re buying something they want or when they’re spending someone else’s money. You can go shopping for your Nexus 7, and not just for a docking stand or a combination keyboard cover. You can buy apps, music, magazines, movies, TV shows, and books.

The Google Play Store may sound like the place where you can go to buy outdoor wear for children, but it’s really an online place where you go to pick up new goodies for your Nexus 7. You can browse, you can get free stuff, or you can pay. It all happens at the Play Store.

  • Officially, it’s the Google Play Store. It may also be referenced as Google Play. The app, however, is named Play Store.

  • The Google Play Store was once known as Android Market, and you may still see it referred to as the Market.

  • App is short for application. It’s a program, or software, you can add to your Nexus 7 to make it do new, wondrous, or useful things.

  • Because the Nexus 7 uses the Android operating system, it can run nearly all apps written for Android.

  • The Play Store is available only when the tablet has an Internet connection.

You access the Google Play Store by opening the Play Store app, found on the All Apps screen but also on the main Home screen.

After opening the Play Store app, you see the main screen. You can browse for apps, games, movies, books, and more.

Touch a top-level item to view more details. You can swipe the screen left or right to see different categories, featured items, and bestsellers. Scroll down to peruse the entire list.

After choosing an individual item, you see a screen detailing the specifics. Scroll down to glean more information.

When you have an idea of what you want, such as an app’s name or even what it does, searching works fastest: Touch the Search icon at the top of the Play Store screen. Type all or part of the app’s name or perhaps a description.

Return to the previous screen by touching the App button in the upper-left corner of the screen.

  • The first time you enter the Google Play Store, you have to accept the terms of service; touch the Accept button.

  • You can be assured that all apps that appear in the Google Play Store can be used with the Nexus 7. There’s no way to download or buy something that’s incompatible with your tablet.

  • Pay attention to an app’s ratings. Ratings are added by people who use the apps — people like you and me. Having more stars is better. You can see additional information, including individual user reviews, by choosing the app.

  • Another good indicator of an app’s success is how many times it’s been downloaded. Some apps have been downloaded over 10 million times. That’s a good sign.

  • In addition to getting apps, you can download widgets for the Home screen, as well as wallpapers for the Nexus 7. Just search the Play Store for widget or live wallpaper.
