Add and Customize Submenus in an iLife '11 iDVD Project
6 of 8 in Series: The Essentials of Customizing an iLife '11 iDVD Project
Depending on which theme you choose, the menus in your iLife iDVD project can hold either 6 or 12 buttons. But a menu can turn ugly with too many buttons. You can put all your extras behind a single button that opens a submenu. As with other components of your iDVD project, you can customize the submenus you add.
To add a submenu, click the Add (+) button in the lower-left corner of the iDVD window and choose Add Submenu from the pop-up menu that appears (or choose Project→Add Submenu). A new button named My Submenu appears on the menu shown in the Viewer. Click this button to highlight the text, and then type over the My Submenu wording to replace it with more appropriate wording (such as More Stuff). You can then customize the button.
To select the new submenu and customize it, click its "page" in Map view. Double-click the submenu "page" to see it and make changes to it in the Viewer. You can then change the submenu title by clicking inside the title and typing over it. You can also set the title's text attributes by choosing the font, typeface, and size from the pop-up menus that appear below the text.
You can use a different theme for each submenu. Though you can pick contrasting themes that boggle the mind and confuse everyone, using a different theme for a submenu may make sense if the submenu offers content that is entirely different from the content offered on the main menu.
Some themes offer drop zones on their submenu templates (such as the Modern theme's Extra template), as well as the capability to change the background and music.
After customizing the theme for the submenu, you can add the content selections that viewers will select when they reach the submenu.
