2010 Winter Olympics: Nordic Combined Medal Favorites

The Nordic Combined event has always been dominated by the northern Europeans. This year the Nordic Combined Olympic medal favorites include the athletes from the Norway, Germany, Sweden, and Russia, but the American team is also in the hunt. If one of the Americans has a good day, he just might win a Nordic Combined medal for the first time ever.

Bill Demong is the best America veteran at Nordic combined. He’ll be returning for his fourth Olympic games, having won the large hill competition at the 2009 World Championships. 2009 was Demong’s best season to date. He won five other World Cup events and medaled seven more times. If he can keep up this consistency, he might just bring home the gold.

Todd Lodwick, a four-time Olympian, is also a contender. Since the beginning of 2009, he has won two Continental Cup races and two World Ski Championships events. He finished in the top 10 in the rest of the World Cup events in 2009. Todd is a bit of a dark horse, but if he’s on top of his game he could surprise the field.

Ronny Ackermann has both experience and consistency on his side. Over the last ten years, he has participated in three Olympic Games and won 101 medals in international competition.

Bjoern Kircheisen has won 11 World Cup medals in 2009-2010 season (three of them were gold). Over his career, he has won 25 races in international competition. This will be Kircheisen’s 3rd Olympic competition. He has never medaled in an Olympic singles event, so he will definitely be looking to redeem himself.

Magnus Moan is another repeat Olympian. At 2006, he won a medal in each of his events. He is particularly strong at cross country. He has made up as many as 20 positions during that portion of the race.

Anssi Koivuranta is Finland’s strongest team member. In five years, he was one Olympic bronze and 28 other medals in international competitions. Anssi is young for Nordic Combined (only 21), but he is a great athlete.

France’s Jason Lamy Chappuis is consistently in medal territory. He has medaled every year since 2006, but he failed to win a medal at the last Olympics. His particular strength is the sprint events.
