Nanotechnology Degree Programs at University of Washington
If you can overlook the rain, you might consider Seattle for your nanoeducation by looking into the University of Washington. The Center for Nanotechnology at UW offers a PhD in Nanotechnology, and gathers more than 75 professors from a variety of disciplines, such as chemistry, physics, bioengineering, electrical engineering, genome sciences, and microbiology. They are funded by the National Science Foundation’s Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (NSF-IGERT) program.

The Nanotech User Facility gives Pacific Northwest researchers and companies an opportunity to use sophisticated characterization and nanofabrication tools. In 2004 the facility became one of the 13 nodes of the National Science Foundation’s National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network. Their emphasis is on nanotechnology in biology and life sciences.
The Nanotech User Facility at UW coordinates with the NSF Ocean Observatories Initiative to lead the way in exploring underwater sensor activity made possible through recent developments in nanotechnology.
The Nanotechnology Modeling Lab is a part of the Electrical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering. They have a focus on nanofabrication, with efforts centered on modeling, simulations, and fabrication of devices. Both graduate and undergraduate students have the possibility of working and researching in the lab.
The University of Washington and Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL) established the Joint Institute for Nanoscience on the university campus in Seattle in 2001. A joint board approves awards of funding to promote joint projects.
Awards are given for graduate student, postdoc, or faculty salaries; tuitions for grad students; and travel or housing expenses. The institute also offers courses for undergraduate and graduate students at the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL). EMSL is a Department of Energy national scientific user facility at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington.
