More Settings on Your Kindle Fire HD
Help & Feedback
When you tap More from Quick Settings and then tap Help & Feedback, you see the Help & Feedback screen, which offers a world of help and allows you to interact with Amazon customer service.
The Help & Feedback screen includes four somewhat self-explanatory items: Getting Started, User Guide, Customer Service, and Feedback. The last two items display a form in which you can type a message to send on to Amazon.
The My Account option in Settings provides information about the account to which the device is registered. To view your Kindle e-mail address, tap the Learn More About Your Kindle Email Address link. To remove this account from your Kindle Fire HD, from the My Account screen you can tap the Deregister button.
Because the obvious thing to do next is to register your Kindle Fire HD to another account (because so much depends on your having an associated account), you then are presented with a Register button. Tap Register and fill in your Amazon username and password to register the device.
When you tap the Parental Controls setting, you’re first presented with the option of turning the controls on. Tap to turn them on, enter and confirm a password, and then tap Finish. In the following screen, tap to unblock the Web Browser or E-Mail, Contacts, and Calendars settings.
You can also tap to password protect purchases or video playback. If you want to allow or block certain types of content, tap Block and Unblock Content Types and then tap the content you want to block, such as Music, Video, or Apps and Games.
Sounds & Display
If you tap Sounds & Display in Settings, you see a volume slider that you can use to increase or decrease the volume, as well as a setting for turning Dolby Digital Plus on or off. The Dolby setting improves Kindle Fire HD’s sound quality but may use up more of your battery life.
You also see two settings controlling the sounds for notifications: Mute All Notifications and Notification Sounds. Notifications may come from the arrival of a new e-mail, a completed download, or an app notification (such as an appointment reminder from a calendar app that you may have downloaded).
To modify notification sounds, tap Mute All Notifications to (you guessed it) mute sounds for notifications, or tap the arrow to the right of the Notification Sounds option and, from the list that appears, choose the sound you want to use.
New with Kindle Fire HD is a location-based feature that enables the device to know where you are in the world. This is useful for some apps and Kindle Fire HD features that need to know where you are in order to provide information or services such as weather or local traffic reports.
When an app or website is using your location information, you’ll see an icon that looks like a cross in a circle in the upper-right corner of the screen near your battery life icon.
To turn location-based services on or off, in Settings, tap Location-Based Services and then tap the On/Off button.
In Settings, tap the Security option and you’ll see five simple choices.
Apps can help you do everything from manage e-mail to play games. Managing the way apps work on your Kindle Fire HD is done through the Applications setting. You access the Applications setting by tapping Applications on the Setting screen. The Applications screen provides you with a list of installed apps, including the app that controls Notification settings.
There are five simple things you can do when you choose Keyboard from the Settings list, three of which offer the basic On/Off choices.
Wireless is a pretty essential setting for using Kindle Fire HD. Without a Wi-Fi connection, you can’t stream video or music, shop at the various Amazon stores, or send and receive e-mail. Tap Wireless in the Quick Settings screen to view the settings shown.
You can check your Kindle Fire HD’s Device settings to find out facts such as the remaining storage space available or your device’s serial number. This is also where you can reset your Kindle Fire HD to the state it was in when it left the factory, if you like a clean slate now and then.
