Marathon Training For Dummies
Wetting Your Whistle on the Fly
Adapted From: Marathon Training For Dummies

One of the reasons you want to run a few tune-up races before your marathon is to practice drinking water while you run. It isn't easy, but the following technique may help.

  1. When you approach the water station, aim for one particular cup of water, hold out your hand, and grasp it tightly as you run by.

  2. With your pinky, ring finger, and middle finger, crush down one half of the top of the cup.

This leaves an oval-shaped area on the other side of the cup from which you can drink.

  1. Open your mouth, tilt your head back a bit, and pour the water from the cup into your mouth through this oval-shape, small opening.

Don't throw the water back into your throat — you'll just choke on it. Instead, pour the water in and swallow in small sips.

  1. Throw the cup on the ground, not worrying about litter.

Volunteers clean up all the cups after all the runners come by.
