What makes a good martial arts school depends on many factors, and some of them have to do with you. If you want to immerse yourself in the philosophy and culture of martial arts, and you sign up at a sport-oriented school, you'll be unhappy no matter how "good" the school is. Thus, you need to have some understanding of your martial arts goals to decide what school is good for you.
All good schools have certain fundamentals in common:
- The training area is large enough for the students to perform their techniques without running into each other.
- It's neat and well kept.
- Equipment is appropriate to the martial art and in good condition. It may not be brand new, but the equipment is well cared for.
- The changing area for men is separate from the women's area.
- Instructors encourage courtesy, respect, and discipline, such that students feel safe during their workout.
- At least some feeling of camaraderie is shared among students.
- Students of all levels of experience, all ages, shapes, colors, and sizes, and both genders are accommodated.
The martial arts are open to all people, regardless of shape, size, gender, ability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious background, or favorite rock star, and you'll probably have more success if you find a school that's truly inclusive. Play close attention to this as you make your choice.
