If you are the type of person who just doesn't understand why anyone would want to walk aimlessly around the neighborhood, walk in circles around a track, or, worst of all, walk nowhere on a treadmill, try choosing a destination. Having somewhere to walk to or from can give you a sense of purpose. Here are some suggested destinations:
- Work: If it's too far to walk the whole way to your job, consider getting off the train or bus one stop earlier or walking one train or bus stop farther.
- The store: You can walk to and from the corner store, the mall, or the shopping center provided they are close enough and aren't along a major highway that is unsafe for pedestrians. If one way is enough for you, arrange to have someone pick you up for the return trip. Carry a knapsack or pull a cart to carry your purchases.
- The gym: Incorporate your walk to and from your fitness facility into your workout.
- A friend's house: You can hang out for a while and ask your friend to drive you back home or bribe your kids to pick you up. Or, if it's a nice day, ask your friend to walk you home.
- Lunch or dinner: Walk to the nearest restaurant or pick up your food instead of having it delivered. You'll burn off some of the calories contained in the meal.
- Your kids' school: Meet your children after school, at the playground, or at their bus stop. You can spend a little bonding time with them and get your walk in. Of course, this idea usually doesn't work with teenagers.
