Take away prefixes and suffixes, and you're left with the root of a word, the part that holds its essential meaning. Memorize the following root, meaning, and example as you prepare for the SAT:

Root: meter

Meaning: to measure

Example: "asymmetry" = lack of equality in size, proportion; "perimeter" = the length of the outer boundary of an area
