Distributing the Soccer Ball
Adapted From: Soccer For Dummies

The goalkeeper has several options when it comes to distributing the ball. Each method has its plusses and minuses.

  • Booting the ball into midfield: Because the goalkeeper is the first attacker when he has possession, his first choice is to find a teammate in a 1-on-1 situation, preferably a forward, so that he can accurately punt the ball. If the keeper is an accurate punter or has a teammate who is exceptional in the air heading the ball, this is an excellent way to distribute the ball. Punting gets the ball up field faster, especially when the keeper's team is trailing late in the game and needs to score quickly. If his team is average in the air, it may retain possession only half the time.
  • Throwing the ball to a teammate well up the field: A quick, accurate throw to a defender (usually one on the left or right flank) can start the team's buildup on attack and maintain possession. If the keeper sees a teammate open farther up the field, she may want to throw the ball overhand or javelin style.
  • Rolling a short pass to a defender who is better at dribbling with the ball: Giving the defender the ball in the area will work over the short term, but it telegraphs to the opposition that the keeper has mediocre or even poor distribution skills. The opponents may try to pressure him or her in a key situation. Sometimes goalkeepers will throw the ball to a teammate who is running away from the play and while not looking at him. A turnover in the defensive third can result.
  • Dribbling the ball up the field: This method isn't advised unless the goalkeeper is blessed with superior feet skills, has some courage, and has a teammate, preferably a defender, who is willing to stay behind and cover for her.
