Digging Up the Dirt on DAO
Adapted From: CD & DVD Recording For Dummies, 2nd Edition

Disc-at-once (DAO) recording mode is the best pick for burning audio CDs, because your recorder's laser is never turned off and the entire disc is written at once. You don't hear a click between tracks, no matter what type of audio CD player you use.

Disc-at-once mode has three drawbacks, though: First, most older CD recorders can't write in DAO mode, so if you own an older drive and you try to select DAO in your recording software, you will probably find that you can't. Second, your disc takes longer to record in disc-at-once mode. Finally, DAO recording occupies more temporary hard drive space because your computer must first create an image file of the entire disc before it can begin burning.
