Dirty switches, jacks, and pots can make your electric guitar sound like a bowl of Rice Krispies snap, crackle, and pop. You can eliminate these unwanted noises with a good cleaning.
Follow this simple three-step process and you should be able to eradicate most minor problems caused by dirt or rust:
Remove the outer knob.
Plastic knobs are usually held on by just friction. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the knob off its post. Metal knobs are often held in place by a small screw. Loosen the screw and pull off the knob.
Spray contact cleaner into the pot.
Turn the pot back and fourth a few times to spread the cleaner over the contact.
Switches and jacks are not always as accessible as pots. On some guitars, you must remove either the pickguard or the jack plate to get to the switch. After you have accessed the part, though, the cleaning technique is the same. Use only as much contact cleaner as you need to get the job done.
