Photo Retouching & Restoration For Dummies
Choosing a Cropping Method
Adapted From: Photo Retouching & Restoration For Dummies

Photoshop Elements offers several ways to cut off unwanted areas from the perimeter of a picture. Which method works best depends on the specific cropping results you want.

  • To crop to approximate photo dimensions: Work with the Crop tool. You can crop your photo to any width or height, and you can even rotate the remaining image area at the same time.
  • To crop to specific dimensions (such as 4 inches by 6 inches): You can use the Crop tool, but a safer option is to use the Rectangular Marquee selection tool in conjunction with the Crop command.
  • To shave a precise amount off one or more sides of the image: Turn to the Canvas Size command.

If you're using a photo editor comparable to Elements, you likely have access to at least the first and last options. Check your software Help system to find out whether the second cropping approach is possible.
