Chi Breathing
Adapted From: Martial Arts For Dummies

To consciously discover your center and your chi, try this breathing technique commonly used in the Korean martial art called Hapkido:

  1. Begin in a natural standing position. Bend your elbows slightly. Bend your wrists, so your palms are flat and parallel to the floor.

  2. Place both hands in front of your abdomen, keeping your hands slightly apart.

  3. Breathe in slowly and deeply. Think of positive chi energy coming into your body. As you breathe, raise your hands to chest level, filling your lungs -- your whole body -- with invigorating chi energy and air.

  4. Wait a moment. Turn your palms down. Expel your breath, moving your palms down to their original position.

This technique reminds you where to find your chi, relaxes you and prepares you for training. Although it's usually done before and during Hapkido training sessions, it can also be done at other times when you feel stressed and frazzled and need to become centered.
