Capital Idea

You may think you've got the basics of capitalization down, but it never hurts to review. You may even be surprised by some of these rules.

You should capitalize the following:

  • The first word of a sentence.
  • The first word in a series of questions.
  • The first word in sentences following a colon (providing that the words after the colon form a complete sentence).
  • The first word in sentences within parentheses.
  • The first word of a quotation.
  • The first letter in a line of poetry.
  • Proper nouns and adjectives.
  • Titles and subtitles of works.
  • The personal pronoun I and the interjection Oh.
