You can find some great deals on perennials by watching for end-of-season clearance sales. Head to your local home improvement center, supermarket, or discount store for bargains. Some of the plants are looking shop-worn by this time, but only the really strong-willed can survive several months on the sales bench. Therefore, these last plants -- the rejected and overlooked -- are usually worth the risk. All they may need is a bit of judicious pruning (including the roots, if they're potbound) and feeding. With some time and care, you'll have great-looking perennials and some extra cash to spend on more plants!
