Ballistic Stretching
Adapted From: Workouts For Dummies

An alternate form of stretching, predominately used by dancers, is ballistic stretching. Ballistic stretching is defined as bouncing, bobbing, or rhythmic motion. One of the major arguments against this type of stretch technique is that it increases the risk of soreness to the muscle, pulling a muscle, or injuring the muscle tissue. If the tissue or muscle is stretched too rapidly, you may not develop optimal flexibility. Instead of relaxing the muscle, the quick reflex action of the stretched muscle causes it to contract. This increases muscle tension and makes it more difficult to stretch out the connective tissue and more likely that you risk injury. In general, ballistic stretching is not recommended as a warm-up exercise.
