The Stray Cat Handbook
Assuming the Role of Mama Cat
Adapted From: The Stray Cat Handbook

Kittens who stay with their mothers until weaning have been shown to be less aggressive and calmer than those who have been hand-reared by humans. Some experts suggest that people who want to hand raise behaviorally sound kittens should mimic the actions of a mother cat beginning at about 3 weeks of age. Occasionally taking the bottle away while the kittens can see it and then diverting their attention to a moving target of soft-cooked meat (or canned cat food or moistened dry food), combined with a verbal cue, should do it. Access to the bottle can gradually be decreased while the verbal cue and solid food should be increased. By 8 weeks of age, bottle-feeding can be discontinued completely.
