Answering the Antonym Call
Adapted From: CliffsTestPrep Verbal Review for Standardized Tests

At test time, remember that the "most nearly opposite" choice may not be a perfect opposite. In all cases, you are looking for the best choice, not necessarily the perfect choice.

Sample Antonym Question:

Choose the most nearly opposite.

CONSEQUENTIAL

(A) indifferent

(B) contradictory

(C) irrelevant

(D) resultant

(E) dismembered

Answer: (A): Consequential consists of con (with) and sequential (in a sequence). It literally means "with a sequence," or more precisely, "following as an effect." The "perfect" opposite of consequential is inconsequential (having no effect), which is not among the choices. So, in this case, the most nearly opposite of consequential is irrelevant (not related).
