English Grammar For Dummies
Achieving Subject-Verb Agreement
Adapted From: English Grammar For Dummies

Always make sure that the subject of your sentence agrees with the verb. The following sentence is INCORRECT:

"His wallet, as well as keys, were gone."

The CORRECT version reads "His wallet, as well as his keys, was gone." Since his wallet is the subject of the sentence, the verb must agree with the singular wallet — not with the plural word that appears in the middle of the sentence.
