Tearing Off Toolbars in Office XP

Adapted From: Office XP For Dummies

Toolbars usually appear at the top of the screen (if they appear at all). You may find two or more toolbars smashed together (which can look confusing). So feel free to tear off your toolbars and move them anywhere around the screen, including the side, bottom, or right in the middle of the screen instead.

To tear off a toolbar, follow these steps:

1. Choose View-->Toolbars and then choose the toolbar that you want to display.

Your chosen toolbar appears on the screen.

2. Move the mouse pointer over the toolbar handle.

The toolbar handle appears as a vertical line at the far left of the menu (as shown in Figure 1). The mouse pointer turns into a four-way pointing arrow when you move the mouse over the menu handle.

3. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse to move the toolbar.

As you move the toolbar away from the top, it turns into a floating window. You can leave the menu as a floating window or move it to the side, top, or bottom of your screen.

4. Release the mouse button when you're happy with the position of your toolbar.

To move a floating window, move the mouse pointer over the title bar of the floating toolbar until the mouse pointer turns into a four-way pointing arrow.

You can use the above steps to move the menu bar of any Microsoft Office XP program to the side, bottom, or in the middle of your screen as a floating menu bar, too.
