When you first launch Excel with a blank workbook, Excel 2002 automatically opens the New Workbook task pane to the immediate right of the workbook. You can use this task pane to edit recently opened workbooks or to create other new workbooks. Along with the New Workbook task pane, Excel 2002 supports two other standard task panes: a Clipboard and a Search task pane.
You use the Clipboard task pane to view and paste any data that you cut or copy to the Windows clipboard — that is, from any Office XP program, not just from your Excel workbook. Use the Search task pane to locate files that you create (with any Office XP program, not just Excel workbooks) or store on your computer's hard drive (such as e-mail messages). You can also use this task pane to find particular values and text that you've entered in the current workbook.
 | In addition to these three standard task panes that are available whenever you work in Excel, you may also encounter specialized task panes that appear only when you perform a particular task. For example, if you use the Insert-->Picture-->Clip Art command to insert a piece of Office XP Clip Art, an Insert Clip Art task pane appears. You use this Task pane to search for the particular type of images that you want to insert, as well as to open the new Clip Art Media Gallery where you view any art images by category that you may want to use. |
You can turn off the display of any Excel Task pane by clicking its Close box located in the upper-right corner of its window. If you close the Task pane when working in Excel (so as to maximize the number of cells displayed on your computer screen), it remains closed until you choose the View-->Task Pane or View-->Toolbars-->Task Pane command on the Excel menu bar.
When the Task pane is displayed, you can select the type of Task pane that you want open by clicking the drop-down button on to the immediate left of the Task pane Close box and then selecting the type of pane to use. Choose from New from Existing Workbook, Clipboard, and Search. After selecting a new type of Task pane, you can scroll between the different Task pane choices by clicking the Previous and Next buttons (marked by a left and right arrow icon, respectively).
 | If you decide that you don't want the New Workbook Task pane to automatically display each time that you start up Excel with a blank workbook, you can turn off this feature by removing (deselecting) the check mark in the Show at Startup check box at the very bottom of this task pane. You can also do the same thing by removing the check mark from the Startup Task pane check box that is located on the View tab of the Options dialog box and opened by choosing Tools-->Options from the Excel menu bar. |
