Synchronizing Local and Remote Sites

Adapted From: Dreamweaver MX For Dummies

After you've performed cleanup and organization on the local copy of your Web site, you'll want to make sure that those changes are reflected on the live site on your Web server. Fortunately, Dreamweaver makes that easy, by including a feature that automatically synchronizes the files in both places. Before you synchronize your sites, you can use the Site FTP dialog box to verify which files you want to put on or get from your remote server. Dreamweaver also confirms which files are updated after you've completed the synchronization.

Follow these steps to synchronize your Web site:

1. Make sure the site you want to work on is selected. Do this by choosing Site --> Open Site and selecting the name of the site you want to work on.

2. Select the Connects To Remote Host button to log on to your remote site.

3. Choose Site --> Synchronize.

A pop-up menu appears.

4. From the pop-up menu, choose to make your local site the master.

You also have the option to make the remote site the master. This choice may be useful if multiple people are working on the same site from remote locations.

5. Choose which option you want to use to copy the files:

• Put Newer Files to Remote: This option copies the most recently modified files from your local site to the remote site.

• Get Newer Files from Remote: This option copies the most recently modified files from your remote site to the local site.

• Get and Put Newer Files: This option updates both the local and remote sites with the most recent versions of all the files.

6. Select whether or not you want to delete the files on your local or remote site.

Be aware that if you don't specify here that Dreamweaver should not delete files, files are automatically deleted if they are not on the site you designated as master. That means that if you choose the local site as the master, Dreamweaver deletes any files on your Web server that do not exist in the local version on your hard drive. If you choose the remote site as the master, Dreamweaver deletes any files in your local site that do not exist on the remote site.

7. Click OK.

The Site FTP dialog box displays the files that are about to be changed.

This is your last chance before files are deleted! In the Site FTP dialog box, you have the option to verify the files you want to delete, put, and get. If you don't want Dreamweaver to alter a file, deselect it now or forever live with the consequences.

8. Click OK.

All approved changes are automatically made, and Dreamweaver updates the Site FTP dialog box with the status.

9. A dialog box appears, and you can choose to save the verification information to a local file.

Choose to save or not save the verification information. Having the option to save this information can be handy later if you want to review your changes.
