Why bother entering information if someone else has already done it for you? You can easily get information about most music CDs from the Internet — assuming that you can connect to the Internet. The online database available for iTunes users holds information for millions of songs on commercial CDs and even some bootleg CDs.
Do it automatically
When you pop a commercial music CD into your computer running iTunes, iTunes automatically looks up the information for that CD on the Internet and fills in the information fields (name, artist, album, and so on). You don't need to do anything to make this happen. You can also edit the information after iTunes fills in the fields. This feature is available only for music CDs as of this writing.
If iTunes isn't doing this automatically, you might need to set iTunes to use the Internet. During the iTunes setup process, iTunes is set up automatically to connect to the Internet and play music from the Internet. However, if you install other software that plays Internet content, you might want to set up iTunes as your default Internet music player. Just follow these steps:
1. Choose iTunes --> Preferences (Mac) or Edit --> Preferences (Windows).
The iTunes Preferences dialog appears with buttons along the top.
2. Click the Advanced tab.
The preferences on the Advanced tab appear.
3. Click the General tab.
The General Advanced preferences appear.
4. Click the Set button next to Use iTunes for Internet Music Playback.
 | You can always stop an automatic modem connection at any time. This is a good idea if your ISP or phone service charges extra fees based on time usage. When iTunes finishes grabbing the song information from the Internet, switch to your remote connection program without quitting iTunes, terminate the Internet connection, and then switch back to iTunes. |
Do it manually
You can connect manually to the Internet at any time (for example, by using a modem connection) and retrieve the song information when you're ready to use it. After you connect to the Internet, choose Advanced --> Get CD Track Names.
Even if you automatically connect to the Internet, the song database on the Internet (known as Gracenote CDDB) might be momentarily unavailable, or you might have a delayed response. If at first you don't succeed, choose Advanced --> Get CD Track Names again.
