In Excel 2002, the Drawing toolbar contains an Insert Diagram or Organization Chart button that you can use to quickly and easily add organization charts to your worksheets. Simply click the Insert Diagram or Organization Chart button to display the Diagram Gallery dialog box (shown in Figure 1). Select the type of chart to draw by double-clicking its image or clicking the image and then clicking OK.

After Excel inserts the basic structure of the org chart into your worksheet, you can replace the stock text with your own by clicking the Click to Add Text button (what else would Microsoft call it?) and typing in the name or title of the person or place that inhabits each level of the chart (as shown in Figure 2).

To insert an additional shape at the same manager level in the chart, choose the Coworker option on the Insert Shape pop-up menu. To insert a shape for a subordinate managerial level directly below the one that's currently selected, choose the Subordinate option on this pop-up menu. To insert a shape for a subordinate managerial level that is indirectly connected to the shape that's currently selected, choose Assistant on the pop-up menu.
 | To enhance the look of your org chart, click the AutoFormat button on the Organization Chart toolbar and then select the diagram style you want to apply to the entire org chart from the Organization Chart Style Gallery dialog box. To have Excel size the text you add to the size of the shapes in the chart, choose the Fit Organization Chart to Contents option on the Layout pop-up menu. To increase the size of the shapes and the overall size of the chart to fit the text that you enter in the chart, choose the Expand Organization Chart option on the Layout pop-up menu instead. |
