Windows Vista's Easy Transfer feature makes transferring certain kinds of settings and data files between two computers comparatively easy. It sounds great and works well, as long as you don't expect too much.
To use Easy Transfer, follow these steps:
1. Make sure that Windows Vista is up and running on the To PC.
Get your hardware installed, go through the Welcome Center, and run Windows Vista long enough to be familiar with it.
2. Log on to the To PC as the user who's supposed to receive all the files and settings from the From PC.
If both the To and From PCs are connected to your network, choose Start --> Network Places or Start --> Computer to make sure that the network connection is up and kicking. If they aren't connected to the same network, get a USB cable and attach it to the USB ports on both PCs, or get that big stack of CDs ready.
3. Choose Start --> Windows Easy Transfer if it's on the Start menu.
If it isn't on the Start menu, choose Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Windows Easy Transfer.
4. Follow the steps on the screen (see Figure 1).
The exact steps vary depending on the method you're using to transfer the data. If you have many large documents or picture files, set aside a few hours to work through the whole process.
Figure 1: Easy Transfer does a credible job of transferring most (and sometimes all) of your files and many of your program settings to a PC running Vista.
