Change is inevitable in life. Okay, some people seem to make MySpace their life — and we suppose change is inevitable on a MySpace account as well. Fortunately, MySpace makes it easy to get under the hood of your account and make changes that effect how it operates for you, as well as for the users that encounter your page.
 | You make changes to how your MySpace page operates on the Change Account Settings page. You can reach this page off your MySpace home page. Click the Account Settings link in the Hello box on the left side of the screen and you're whisked to the My Account Settings box where you can tinker with your page. |
There are a number of settings you can change from this page.
- E-mail Address: You can alter the e-mail account associated with your page. Simply enter the name of the account you want to use and click Change at the bottom of the box.
- Change Password: Click the Change Password link to access the Change Password screen. You'll be required to enter your current password and new password, as well as a verification code presented in the same format as the one you entered when you initially signed up.
- Notifications: Click the box to turn off notification e-mails from MySpace.
- Newsletters: Click the box to stop delivery of MySpace newsletters to your e-mailbox.
- Privacy Settings: In order to protect MySpace users who wish to keep their profiles limited to friends only, MySpace has added a number of privacy controls designed to limit who can see or comment on your site. Click the Change Settings link to reach controls that allow you to
• Require other users to provide your e-mail address or last name before they can add you to their accounts as a friend
• Approve any comment added by another user before it's posted
• Hide your online status
• Block your birthday from friends
• Block picture forwarding from your account
• Allow only friends to leave comments on your blog entries
• Block friend requests from bands
• Only allow friends to send group invites
• Only allow friends to view your full profile
- IM Privacy Settings: Controls who is allowed to send you instant messages.
- Mobile Settings: In a nod to the wireless world, MySpace will now send text messages to your mobile phone when you get a new friend request, message, event invite, or a comment on your profile, blog, or an image.
- Groups Settings: Controls notices on new posts in your MySpace groups.
- Calendar Settings: Click the Change Settings link to alter the default view of your calendar, set sharing filters, set the day the week begins on, change time intervals, set working hours, and establish reminder settings.
- Blocked Users: Displays the users you've blocked from your account.
- Profile Views: Clicking the Reset Count link sets your counter displaying the number of times your profile has been viewed back to zero.
- Profile Settings: This control allows you to display the MySpace Groups you belong to as well as to disable the use of HTML in profile, image, and blog comments. The HTML controls are handy if you want to keep other users from dropping audio, video, or image files onto your MySpace page.
- Music Settings: Adding music to your MySpace page is a nice touch. Unfortunately not everyone is a fan of a song suddenly blaring at them as they bop around the Web. This control allows you to keep songs on both your profile and other users' profiles from automatically starting when you pay their pages a visit.
- Away Message: This control allows you to set a message that will automatically be sent to other users that send you messages while you're away from MySpace for an extended period.
- Preferred Site & Language: The drop-down menu allows you to change the preferred site you selected when you initially signed up for MySpace.
- Time Zone Settings: You can change the time zone used to display the time of your messages and comments. New members on the US site are automatically set to the home time zone of the MySpace offices, Pacific Time.
Once you've marched your way through this list of decisions and options, you're officially a part of the MySpace universe. As you might expect, this initial creation is only the beginning of the fun.
