Macromedia Contribute For Dummies

Installing and Launching Contribute

Adapted From: Macromedia Contribute For Dummies

Before you can use any program, you have to install it. Well, someone has to install it. If you work at a big company, nonprofit, or university, it's quite likely someone else (usually someone from the tech support department) will install this program for you. If not and you are faced with the challenge of installing this program on your own, here's where you start. If Contribute appears in the list of programs on your computer already, all you need to do is start the program and begin acquainting yourself with the workspace.

If you don't already have a copy of Contribute, you can download a free, fully-functional 30-day trial version or purchase a licensed version directly from Macromedia's Web site.

Always make sure that you have closed all the programs on your computer before you install a new program. That means that before you install a new program like Contribute, you should shut down any programs you have running, such as e-mail or word processing. When all the other programs are closed, you can start the install process by double-clicking the install icon.

If you have a copy of Contribute on a CD-ROM and want to install it on your computer, insert the CD into your CD drive. The main screen of the CD should automatically open. Look for a .exe file or a file that says "Install" and double-click to launch the installation wizard. If you have a copy of the program that was downloaded over the Internet or copied to your hard drive, open the folder that contains the downloaded file and double-click the install icon or .exe file to launch the installation wizard.

The install wizard walks you through the process of installing the program — you simply select the Next button on each screen to advance through all the options and automatically install the program on your hard drive. Unless you know that you want to do something special when you install Contribute, choose all the features they recommend and simply follow the general instructions.

At the end, check the box that says Launch Contribute to automatically start the program after it's installed. When Contribute starts, it automatically looks for access to the Internet. If your computer is not connected to the Internet, or is having trouble connecting, Contribute prompts you with two options: Work Offline or Try to Connect Anyway. If you choose the second option, Contribute keeps trying to establish a connection for you.

You can use Contribute without being connected to the Internet. To do so, choose Work Offline when the program launches. If you want to go offline while you are working, choose File --> Work Offline and you can switch back and forth. Be aware, however, that if you use Contribute without being connected to the Internet, you can work only on new pages you create or existing pages that you already have copied to your computer. Similarly, you will not be able to publish your work until you are connected to the Internet and you have reestablished Contribute's connection to your site.

When the program launches successfully, the first screen to open is the Welcome screen. In the future, you can start Contribute by double-clicking the icon that is installed on your hard drive or by selecting Start --> Programs --> Macromedia --> Macromedia Contribute.
