Inserting and Ejecting a PC Memory Card

Adapted From: PCs For Dummies, 11th Edition

To read a memory card, your PC must come equipped with a memory card reader. Most modern PCs come with a combination card reader, a series of four separate slots into which each type of memory card can be inserted. Older PCs can use a memory card reader peripheral, which attaches to the PC by using a USB cable.

A memory card isn't the same thing as a flash drive. Both devices are similar in that they're solid-state, but a flash drive connects to the PC by using a USB port, not a memory card slot. Flash drives are also known as thumb drives because many of them are about the same size as a human thumb.

Inserting a memory card

To use a memory card, just plug it into the proper card slot, either located directly on the PC's console or via a memory card adapter attached to a USB port. Windows instantly recognizes the card and mounts it into the computer system, making whatever information is on the card instantly available.

After inserting the memory card, you may see the AutoPlay dialog box displayed. Use the dialog box to choose how to view the card's contents, such as choosing the View Pictures option to view images stored on the card from a digital camera.

The information on a memory card is accessed through the Computer window. The memory card is given a letter, just like any other permanent storage device in Windows.

  • Don't force a memory card into a slot! If you can't get the memory card into one slot, try another.
  • Memory cards are inserted label side up. For vertically mounted memory card readers, try label-left (although this may not always work).
  • Yes, the quickest way to get images from your digital camera is to yank out (well, gently yank out) its memory card and plug that card into your PC.

Ejecting a memory card

You cannot just yank out a memory card. And often, there's nothing to prevent you from being naughty and yanking out the card. But if you do so, you run the risk of damaging the card or destroying the information stored on the card. Be proper! Follow these steps to remove a memory card the safe, happy way:

1. Open the Computer window.

2. Click to select the memory card's icon.

It's found in the part of the window labeled Devices with Removable Storage.

3. Click the Eject button on the toolbar.

You may notice the memory card's icon change or turn gray, which is a sign that it's okay to remove the card.

4. Pull the memory card from the card reader.

Be sure to store the memory card in a safe, static-free location when you're not using it.
